New Hen Keepers
Day-to-Day Care
- Feed: A good layer feed (100–150g/day) via a feeder, plus fresh scraps like sweetcorn, lettuce, wheat, and corn — scatter on the ground so they can forage (this also prevents boredom and feather pecking)
- Water: Always available, raised off the ground — check it hasn't frozen in winter, and expect higher demand in summer
- Grit & oyster shell: Provide separately for digestion and eggshell strength (or use a mixed grit)
- Cleaning: Either a daily poo-pick with a monthly deep clean, or a full weekly clean — just keep bedding clean and dry
Mixing Breeds
Generally fine — our hybrids are reared in mixed batches, so they're used to living together. Occasionally a particularly timid or bossy hen needs separating. We recommend our hybrids: friendly, placid, hardy, and productive.
Getting Ready
Set up housing before buying hens. Look for:
- A lockable door/pop-hole (predator-proof)
- Good ventilation without draughts
- A partly covered run for weather shelter
Inside: line the floor with a wipeable plastic sheet, add ~2cm bedding, and a handful of straw in the nest box. Hang feeders up to keep food dry and pest-free, and raise the drinker off the ground to stop it filling with dirt.
Our hen Guarantee
Every hen comes with a one-week health guarantee. If you have any concerns, let us know as soon as possible.
Within that week, we'll offer a credit note or a like-for-like exchange for any hen in poor health (stress-related issues excluded, unless our care advice has been followed).
The guarantee doesn't cover predator loss, escapes, or behavioural issues. We stand by the quality of our birds, but once they've left us we can't control their environment — so cover is limited to one week.

General Information
When introducing new hens to an existing flock, having treats on hand for the first few days can help with integration, giving them something else to focus on. These are all available to buy when you collect your hens.
Our hens come with a one-week health guarantee from the date of sale (details on the faqs page). Using a poultry tonic or poultry boost for the first few weeks can help reduce stress and support their immune system as they settle in — these are also available to buy on collection.
The colour of the eggs can never be 100% guaranteed, especially with blue/green egg layers.
Our hens are usually sold between 17–26 weeks old, with point of lay typically between 18–24 weeks — so don't expect your hens to start laying immediately, and allow a few weeks for them to settle into their new home.
Unfortunately, we don't allow hens to be returned except for health reasons. This is to protect our existing flock, particularly with bird flu still a risk.
